In January 2016, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter opened all remaining ground combat roles to women. Leading up to that decision, three women graduated from Ranger School in 2015, demonstrating that women could succeed in one of the military's toughest leadership crucibles. The Army is focused on improving readiness by finding the right people for the right positions, regardless of gender. Critical to finding the right people is holding everyone to a defined, achievable standard for their career field and military occupational skill.
